How to show you care
TRY THIS...
Showing others you care about their contribution may sound like it’s about how you ‘show it’ but it’s actually more about how they feel about what you do. A bit like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, caring is in the heart of the receiver.
Matching up your intentions with their feelings can take some trial and error…OR alternatively, you could bypass that and go straight to the source and get your team or colleagues to create a ‘caring wish list’.
Ask everyone to finish these sentences.
I know someone values my contribution in a meeting if…
I know someone appreciates my effort when…
I know someone cares about me by the way they…
You can then collate the answers and create a wish list to ensure everyone feels valued.
Want to be more subtle?
If you prefer the more subtle approach you could
Observe and listen for how they show care to others. We often give what we want to receive.
Ask someone’s advice on how best to show appreciation to someone else… what they suggest might be revealing of their take on what care and appreciation looks like.
If you reply to me now about what makes you feel valued and cared for, I will add you to the list I am collating and send you a copy.
SOMETHING TO PONDER...
How often have you decided that someone does or doesn’t care based on their behaviour?
When did you last show someone you cared and it didn’t end the way you expected?
Could this be a case of right person, but wrong type of care?
