What Happens When You Stop Doing?

I recently spent some time with someone who is very good at creating space for other people.

  • They ask questions and actually wait for the answer.

  • They encourage people to stop and think.

  • They talk about the importance of listening to what is going on beneath the surface.

But when it comes to creating space for themselves, that doesn’t come so easily.

In life and in business, ‘busy-ness’ often wins the day, with somewhere to be and something to do. Ideally right now

It can be very difficult taking time to reflect, stepping back to observe and creating space to see what wants to unfold.

TRY THIS

Find a bit of empty space in your diary this week… or ‘make it’ if you need to.

Then leave it empty.

Don't call it “thinking time” and then fill it with emails or admin.

Lie on the sofa… stare out of the window… Just ‘do’ nothing.

You might be surprised what turns up.

PS - That someone was me…

I took August off from writing and then, as if by magic, I got a throat infection and lost my voice for four days. So I had no choice. I had to sit down, and shut up!!

And in the silence, I realised why I’d put off refreshing my website…

Sometimes answers don’t want to be hunted down via advice, search engines or activities… sometimes they just want to knock at your door and find that you’re in.

And if you know a person, team or organisation that could do with a little more space to notice what they already know, feel free to pass this on.

You never know what might knock on their door.
